The Push Mow is a laid-back, fun time, very low-key with lots of “local color”. It is an informal event, with homemade floats, hand-drawn decorated wagons, embellished golf carts ,bedazzled four wheelers, quirky marching groups, and flatbed trailers transformed into rolling statements with the theme “Oughta Be A Law”. Led by the bag piping group “Kilts of Many Colours” and this year’s Grand Marshall, our Citizen of the Year, Lynnette Soule, the parade is a great chance to catch some throws in a small town atmosphere. Museum Board member Bryan Gowland describes the Push Mow as “anything goes, up to and including walking down the street pushing a lawn mower. Creative thinkers interpret the themes and march along the route that is about a mile long. Push Mow originated as an idea discussed by a group of friends at a Twelfth Night Party in Abita in the 1990’s. The idea took form when Ann O’Brien, late silver artist, and her husband, UCM/Mystery House curator enlisted Michelle Kelsey and her “Queen Bees” to form a parade.” Preble later offered the parade to the Abita Springs Trailhead Museum as a fundraising vehicle, and it has expanded to include a popular after party featuring “Benny Grunch and the Bunch” and a “Push Mow Café” with a variety of food and drinks. A variety of prizes for creativity will be awarded at the Push Mow Party.
